Leo Carillo Sea Cave on Christmas Afternoon (#158)

Heather and I spent Christmas afternoon at the beach!
Leo Carillo beach has some great sea caves when the tide is low enough. I was shooting some pretty boring shots of this one when this kid ran through. I waited for him to get out into the sunlight on the other side, and snapped this shot. Hope you like it!
Crab
Here’s another photo I took with the new 100/2.8 Macro lens yesterday:
I came upon this little crab while I was looking for starfish to photograph. An instant after I snapped the shutter, a wave came in, nearly engulfing me and my 5D, and he was gone.
It’s been a long time since I shot with a 100mm lens, and I had forgotten how shallow its depth-of-field is. I guess I’m gonna have to pay more attention to depth-of-field with this lens.
An early Christmas present!
Because our spare time has become so precious, Heather and I have been making a point to get out of the house on the weekends. Lately we’ve been going to the beaches around here, where she looks for beach glass and I take photos. It’s a really great way to unwind.
Today she gave me an early Christmas present for our trip to the beach — a Canon EF 100mm/f2.8 Macro lens! I had a great time taking it for a spin at Abalone Cove Beach in Palos Verdes, which has some wonderful tide pools.
Here’s a starfish I found stranded a little ways up the beach:
And here’s the best piece of beach glass she found today:

So much for that idea
So much for taking the Contax 159MM out for a spin. The shutter appears to be stuck, so I’ll have to take it in for repairs.
I’ve loaded up the Nikon FG instead.
The FSLR is dead, long live the FSLR
While writing yesterday’s post about the new DSLRs from Canon and Nikon, I started thinking about the DSLR label. Digital SLR. Why do we even bother with the “D” anymore? Digital has won. Sure, there are still a few film SLRs being manufactured, but they are largely ignored, at least in the 35mm world. They are the odd balls. They should be FSLRs.
So starting right now, on this blog, digital SLRs shall be known as SLRs and film SLRs as FSLRs.
I’m going to take my Contax 159MM, one of my favorite FSLRs of all time, and a roll of film out for a spin. I’ll post some pics in a couple weeks after the film is developed. Long live the FSLR!
Now go out and shoot.
New cameras galore
If you were living under a rock this week, or if you were too busy watching your net worth plummet on Google Finance, you might have missed the new camera announcements.
Canon announced two new DSLRs and a new compact:
- The Canon EOS 40D 10MP APS-C DSLR
- The Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III 21MP (!!) Full Frame DSLR
- The nifty Canon PowerShot G9 12MP compact point & shoot
Nikon followed shortly thereafter, announcing two new DSLRs of their own:
- The Nikon D300 12MP APS-C DSLR
- The Nikon D3 12MP Full Frame DSLR
Good stuff. Did I mention that the EOS 1Ds Mark III 21MP?!? Canon finally made a medium format camera.
And welcome to full-frame, Nikon users! Nikon’s entry into the full-frame market should be exciting news for Nikon and Canon fans because the competition will lead to lower-priced full-frame DSLRs in the near future.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I’m not going to buy any of them. I wouldn’t even if my net worth hadn’t dropped like 50% the last couple weeks. I won’t need more than my 5D for a long, long time. If I were going to buy one, it would probably be the G9.

Bamboo Graffiti
Heather and I took a little photo expedition to the Huntington Botanical Gardens today. It’s a really beautiful place, and we had a great time. The 5D and I had no problem filling up an entire card. Here’s one of my very first shots of the day, a patch of bamboo where many people have carved graffiti.

Bamboo Graffiti
Stubborn Bastard
I waited and waited for this gull to fly so I might possibly catch him with his wings outstretched, but nothing I tried would make him budge. The group of friends I was with left me behind, and I was sure they had reached the parking lot by this time, so I finally gave in and snapped this shot, my last one of the day.
Stubborn Bastard.
