I Voted
I attached my ballot stub to the sample ballot with the “I Voted” sticker. I’m keeping this one! (View on Flickr)
California Ground Squirrel
If you’ve been along the California coast, you’ve probably seen these squirrels. They are everywhere! And they aren’t afraid of people.

Huntington #78
I took advantage of the rain today and got a lot of things done that I have been meaning to do for a long time. Going over my photos from 2007 looking for hidden gems was one of them.

Heather and I spent Christmas afternoon at the beach!
Leo Carillo beach has some great sea caves when the tide is low enough. I was shooting some pretty boring shots of this one when this kid ran through. I waited for him to get out into the sunlight on the other side, and snapped this shot. Hope you like it!
Crab
Here’s another photo I took with the new 100/2.8 Macro lens yesterday:
I came upon this little crab while I was looking for starfish to photograph. An instant after I snapped the shutter, a wave came in, nearly engulfing me and my 5D, and he was gone.
It’s been a long time since I shot with a 100mm lens, and I had forgotten how shallow its depth-of-field is. I guess I’m gonna have to pay more attention to depth-of-field with this lens.
An early Christmas present!
Because our spare time has become so precious, Heather and I have been making a point to get out of the house on the weekends. Lately we’ve been going to the beaches around here, where she looks for beach glass and I take photos. It’s a really great way to unwind.
Today she gave me an early Christmas present for our trip to the beach — a Canon EF 100mm/f2.8 Macro lens! I had a great time taking it for a spin at Abalone Cove Beach in Palos Verdes, which has some wonderful tide pools.
Here’s a starfish I found stranded a little ways up the beach:
And here’s the best piece of beach glass she found today:

Memorial Day Sculptures
Every year around Memorial Day weekend, Heather and I travel to the Bay Area to visit our friends Kathryn and Brian and celebrate Brian’s birthday. Usually the highlight of our trip is a highly contested round of Trivial Pursuit, men vs. women, traditionally dominated by the men. This year, for a change of pace or perhaps just to give the women a chance, we got a couple of new games to play: Cranium and Pop5.
If you’re familiar with the games, you know that part of the fun is the making of play dough sculptures. If you’re not familiar, well… now you know. :)
Without further ado, here are some of our sculpture masterpieces from last weekend, presented without much judgment as to their artistic or aesthetic merits. No cracks about my shitty photographic skills either. :)
Turtle by Michael (Cranium)
Rocking Chair by Heather (Cranium)
Frying Pan by Kathryn (Cranium)
California Raisins (???) by Heather (Pop5)
Hacky Sack by Brian (Pop5)
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers by Heather (Pop5)
Cheers by Brian (Pop5)
Etch A Sketch by Brian (Pop5)
and my personal favorite… Forrest Gump by Michael (Pop5)
The men still dominated, by the way. :)
